They have charm and utility. Form and function: the perfect design formula...
behold, the vintage wire basket!

This vintage, locker basket is just the fit. Hang it up or place it on a shelf. Wire baskets store onions and potatoes in the pantry and organize crafts and office supplies. Metal baskets go every where from bathrooms to laundry rooms. Buy it
here at my Etsy Vintage Shop and start your own organizing project.
Love this office: wire baskets look great hung on the walls with the mix of empty frames. Not sure why the fire extinguisher needs to be so close to the work area??

I used this green, vintage basket to hold extra toilet paper in my daughter's bathroom. Found at Old Luckettes Store.

I've been on an organizing frenzy lately. It may have to do with my sister coming in from Seattle tomorrow. But do I really need to pull everything out of my closet and completely reorganize my husband's suits and shoes and my handbags and sweaters? It looks like The Gap in there now, everything so perfectly folded and color coordinated. My sister hasn't visited us in this house since we moved here. I think I'll show her my closet first. Don't mind the dog hair that needs to be vacuumed off the family room rug, check out how neatly I've folded my husband's jeans! I'm sure she'll have a great time staying with me.
Or maybe it's cabin fever. It's too cold to even go get the mail. We see a lot of our walls (closets, laundry rooms, garage) this time of year. Lots of indoor time. I've already got plans going for a laundry room re-organization... which got me thinking about my pantry. I haven't actually done anything in the laundry room, except laundry.. but I do have it all finished in my head, and of course I'm already onto my next project without even touching the first. I can feel myself breaking my New Years Resolution: to complete projects once started.
I love what the author of the blog, House of Smiths, did with her basic pantry.

It's a must check it out blog site. Shelley (the author of the blog) breaks down each DIY element, even things that didn't work. She includes all her resources and budget. It's a fun read and what a Joy of a Pantry. Who wouldn't love to put away groceries here?
She talks about saving room by loosing all those big boxes food comes in and gives resources for food containers. Brilliant.
There is something to be said about organizing objects so that you can see everything. I wonder how much we purchase things, thinking we don't have it. Days later, we find we did have glue sticks in a 5 pack, tucked away months ago. And, this all goes back to the idea that form and function can work together for a more functional and satifying home environment.

I love this pantry design too, from House Beautiful. If you have a bit more budget, consider a custom built design. And, if you have just a few feet to take on the other side of the wall (maybe from the garage?) then this is the way to go.

I find, that when designing a plan for organizaiton, it's best to start backwards. Consider all the elements that need storage and build from there. But, before you plan, consider if you really want to keep that bread machine from 1989. Or, are you really going to unbox cereals and baking supplies? Is it a joy or an irritating task to move food items to charming containers? If it's a joy, then you are of the "my pantry needs decorating" camp and it's time to wallpaper the inside of the pantry (and the laundry room).
