Staircases are large pieces of furniture. So, upholster them! ...with a striped runner.
And don't be afraid of paint.
I'd have to say, at the top of my list is Annie Selke's rug company, Dash and Albert.

These are smart, go with just about everything, timeless runners. Probably best on painted stairs, making those colors pop.

A few cans of gloss or semi gloss white paint, a colorful, striped runner... and it's a done deal. Combined a runner with a patterned rug at the base of the stairs or a plain wool rug at the upstairs.
